Hokum - Movie Review

SPOILERS AHEAD

This movie was such a unquie style of horror that I really haven't seen much of, especially lately. Horror movies focus a lot on either jump scares or just good kills. This movie its focus is primarily atmosphere which to me is the scariest form of horror. Atmosphere, music, good choices and subtle jump scares put in good places are what make a good horror film to me. Such a small detail that I loved was that throughout the film, the main character, Ohm, didn't constantly speak to himself while being alone. I find that unnecessary use of dialogue or speaking, takes you away from the atmosphere of the film. In Hokum's case, it kept you in this unsettling atmosphere the whole time. He wasn't just talking to fill up space or keep the audience listening. It built a sense of uncomfortability and already set the tone.

They did an amazing job on how they made Fiona look. Not only was it insanely creepy everytime it panned over to her but it wasn't overly done. That's the thing with a lot of horror movies for me, is it's overdone or they try to hard so in Hokum's case, they did just enough. The scare factor in general was just enough to make your skin crawl but it wasn't gory and constant jump scares.

The only few things I was not too sure on was the creepy tv show host thing. At first, I was like there's no way it's a real show, so what is this? But then I thought maybe in some messed up world this really was a show. After speaking to my boyfriend, he thinks it was that mushroom milk that the bellboy snuck into his drink, making him trip out. So maybe it did happen and he wrote to a show and they said this back to him. Or maybe it was all just a halluniation but to me this character or section felt a little forced in the sense of they just wanted to create this ultra creepy character to fit the vibe of the movie. Don't get me wrong the reveal that he was the one who killed his mom was done so well but I just wonder how well this weird tv show host guy section fit into the movie. My other thing would be that the whole witch part when she comes up the elevator shaft thing, now it was creepy seeing her crawl up it but once she got there, it felt like this big build up just dropped. They added a weird goofy moment too when she jumped up to see him, you couldn't help but laugh and I get this movie had a TON of comedic elements  but in that moment, that's where you wanna really scare us. The build up to this witch was the moment to really get the audience and maybe I don't scare easily but it felt somewhat underwhelming.

Other than that, one of the most well done horror movies I've seen in the longest time. It did some things that really separates it from any horror movie I've seen, and that's a huge thing to do. I very much recommend this movie and would rate it a 7.1/10 (Im a harsh critic so that's a very very good score for me, most things don't make it above 5 or 6).
